13 days across Norway
Day 1 : 11km
Clem
Starting the first day with a small day but with such heavy backpack that it took us a while to progress through the tunturi of Pikku-Malla.
But the sun was with us !
Day 2: 12 km - Paltsa Tugan
After a day in Finland, we crossed to Sweden for a day of hiking before going to Norway. But if the trail looks easy, the hike isn't really and we need to take our time to be able to reach the Paltsa hut. The weather is clear sky and the view on the Swedish mountains are stunning.
Day 3: 15 km
At the Paltsan hut, the keeper told us that a "shortcut" was existing and letting us skipping an annoying part of the hike. We decided to choose this option and, after a few kilometres, turning south instead of continuing west.
We bumped into a father and his daughter, walking toward a hut made of stones. He shared with us that his father and great father built it when the arctic fox hunting was profitable.
Nearby, a former airfield made by the German during the WW2 was visible by the absence of rocks. Traces of living are everywhere.
Day 4: ending the off road
Clem
The weather started to change. We continued on the "shortcut" to avoid a detour by a hut. We decided to take it. Even though it shorted it by a few kilometres, the wind did not help us. Off track was not the most efficient way neither, and we ended up doing less kilometre than expected.
In the evening, wind rose, and the tent suffered from it. Here, no trees or rock big enough can protect you from this invisible force.
Day 5: the weather change
After a full day of high wind, the clouds started to change and getting darker.
Halfway of the day plan, the mix of high wind and heavy rain pushed us to change our route and walk down the valley instead of going through the mountain. A good decision.
Day 6
After the tough day of bad weather and rain, we decided to take it more chill and walking down to the valley to avoid the wind.
The rain came by wave, hitting us as we were already soaked.
But by chance, we bumped into a cute cabin that was not on the map! A German couple was already there, staying for the night. But we managed to squeeze to dry our stuff and set the tent next to. A salvation for us.
Day 7
It was now all about weather, and this day is one of them that bring sun and landscape as a reward !
We walked along this endless valley and went up to the plateau. Encountering reindeer quite close for once !
Day 8
The sun came back even more and joined us on the hike. The calm proposed us lake with their calm attitude. What clear water !
We went through a mountain pass covered by rocks that slowed us down a lot. Every steps are a game of balance to keep up.
Clem
We slept in a tent each night but most of the time near a hut. Not that we wanted to use it but that they are in such amazing spots ! And this night one was the case as well. The clearest river we had. But very cold !
Day 9
If we had to choose one day of boreness, it would have been this one: Flat, muddy and following a road. Some cars and working road near a dam. Walking on gravel is surprisingly tirering for the mind. Blister are waking up.
Day 10
The forecast for the day after was announcing bad weather, the legs felt good so we decided to push and cross the last mountain pass and have a day of rest in the last hut in the Swedish side.
The feel of ending the hike is coming, we got access to network for the first time. Always a mixed feeling of coming back to daily life...
Day 11
Is was an interresting day. We were as much looking for than beeing annoyed by it. We had not much to do and the train and ferry scheduled didn't allowed us to reach abisko this day. So we read the last pages of our books, played card game and made food throughout the day.
Day 12
It was supposed to be a chill day, just a few kilometer to let us reaching abisko on time the day after to have a good lunch before taking the night train. But no !
Maybe one of the hardest day of the hike. Hard to walk at the beginning, boring for the rest and a crazy wind that forced us to lay against it. A bit stressful at the end because we didn't know if the cabin would allowed us to stay in and if the wind would fall down. But after a few hours, the weather cleared up and we set the camp one last time.
Day 13
The end ! After the previous day, we were set to leave, have a good warm lunch and heading back to Finland !
